Over 130 years in one city.

The industry changed. The equipment changed. The capabilities expanded. Today, Weber continues under third-generation Doherty and Zambon family ownership. Through every ownership change and expansion, the core of the business has remained the same: a manufacturing operation run by people who take the work seriously.

Weber Milestones

1893

David Weber founded the David Weber Company at Fifth & Locust Streets in downtown Philadelphia, one of the earliest corrugated manufacturers in the United States.

1895

Weber commissions Philadelphia machinist C.F. Langston to build the world's first singlefacer, a machine that remains fundamental to corrugated manufacturing today.

1915 - 1916

David Weber & Co. is formally incorporated by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. During the same period, David Weber secured two U.S. patents for corrugated packaging innovations, including the reinforcing "Box Stay" and the "Non-Buckling Folding Box."

1923

The PakSafe trademark is registered alongside the Keystone mark. Both brands appear on Weber box certificates for decades and prominently feature the company's 1893 founding date.

1925

As the business grows, Weber builds a new facility at 3500 Richmond Street in Philadelphia's Port Richmond neighborhood, where the company remains today.

1935

Weber patents a stronger double-walled corrugated board design. That same year, Isadore H. Weber secures additional corrugated packaging patents in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain.

1951

The Chesapeake Corporation of Virginia acquired the David Weber Company and operated it as a subsidiary for the next four decades.

1983

Following a national consolidation of Chesapeake's packaging operations, the Philadelphia facility begins operating under the Chesapeake Packaging Co. name.

1991 - 1992

Jim Doherty Jr. acquires the company from Chesapeake, restores the Weber name, and reestablishes Weber Display & Packaging. Within a year, Weber was named Manufacturer of the Year and makes its first major capital investment with the installation of two Langston Titan rotary die-cutters.

2004

The Doherty and Zambon families expanded into warehousing and fulfillment by founding PakSafe Industries. During the same year, Weber invested in a new BHS corrugated wet end.

2006

PakSafe acquired a 30,000-square-foot facility at 2905 East Ontario Street, expanding its warehousing and fulfillment operations.

2011

Weber completes a full corrugator modernization with the installation of a new dry end, finishing the BHS line that began with the 2004 investment.

2012

The third generation of the family joins the business, continuing Weber's tradition as a family-owned company.

2013

James R. Doherty Jr. passes away at age 76. His commitment to hard work, integrity, and the people around him continues to shape the company today.

2015

After years of investment in equipment, people, and capabilities, Weber records the strongest sales performance in company history.

2016

Weber installs a BOBST Mastercut 1.7, one of the industry's most advanced flatbed die-cutters.

2017

PakSafe acquires a new facility at 9300 Ashton Road, significantly expanding fulfillment and logistics operations. Weber begins converting the Ontario Street building into additional manufacturing space.

2019

Weber installs a BOBST 1228 four-color flexo folder-gluer. Ontario Street also completes its transition into a fully equipped Weber production facility.

2020

A two-color BOBST ExpertCut is installed at the Ontario Street facility, expanding Weber's manufacturing capacity.

2024 - 2025

Weber adds a BOBST Mini 618 flexo folder-gluer and a BHS FlexLine singlefacer, capping more than $40 million in equipment and technology investments since 1991.

2026

Weber now spans 320,000 square feet across multiple facilities and serves clients in more than 50 industries. Still in Philadelphia. Still family owned. Still growing.
